BEST TIPS & TRICKS for Preserving Bone Broth

I love, love, LOVE Bone Broth !!

You will hear me singing the praises of this wondrous broth on many of my sites’ pages.

WHY ?

Because I have personally experienced its’ ‘miraculous’ benefits in literally minutes. (Great anecdotal knowledge, for sure. Sign Up on the right for more info about Bone Broth and other great health-related topics.)

And because I have experienced some life-altering benefits from it, I have realized firsthand the unsung value of this commodity and the importance of incorporating it into my daily life.

It has, quite literally, become one of my cornerstones of health and well-being.

So innocent it seems.

So unassuming.

“Newly discovered” or so everyone thinks.

But if you take time to think back on your past, maybe to when you were little and when your Grandmother used to make you soup …

Do you remember her telling you how she made it ?

Do you remember her sharing with you the ‘secrets’ of her soup stock ?

I do.

I remember my Grandmother making her own special soup for my sister and I —- her “Spaghetti Soup”.

Oh how we loved her Spaghetti Soup.

And not just my sister and I, but my Mom and Dad, all of my cousins and my uncles and aunts, as well.

(I think that she is probably laughing right now in heaven, seeing me write about her family famous “Spaghetti Soup”. I love you, Mamé !)

Anyways…

Do you know what she used to make it with ?

Besides spaghetti ?

Beef bones.

She used to make this beef bone broth, that I didn’t think was particularly special at the time, but I recall her telling me that it gave the soup some special qualities that made it extra yummy and especially good for us.

And while I nodded my head in understanding of what she had told me, that’s not where my main attention was drawn. I was interested, like my little sister, in the more ‘important’ ingredient … the spaghetti, of course !!

(Oh please, I was about 6 or so at the time —- I knew what my ‘priorities’ were … and besides, she wasn’t about to get too technical with me. While she wasn’t a highly educated woman [she was only schooled up to grade 6 {1923}], she still had enough sense to know that her soup was good for our bodies and that it helped strengthen our bones. And just to hear my Grandmother tell me that it was yummy and good for us was all that I needed to hear !)

NOW, of course, I KNOW where the real treasure was.

In that innocent, unassuming, wondrously nutritious BONE BROTH.

Little did I know at that time that she was sharing with me an age-old, “poor man’s” source of minerals and nutrients.

Because my grandparents were not wealthy people.

They were early settlers in central Alberta, Canada who farmed the land, raised a large family, learned a variety of trades, and did what they could to live and be happy. They always worked. And with 12 children to feed, at various ages and stages, there was never a quiet or dull moment.

My grandmother used the methods that she had learnt from her mother and her grandmother before that.

Old traditional methods born out of necessity and the need to make the absolute best use of every single thing they could.

And that included food.

No part of the cow or chicken or pig or whatever went to waste.

My Father was a depression-era baby, actually most of my Aunts and Uncles were.

That was a time when nothing … ABSOLUTELY NOTHING went to waste!!

The funny thing is, is that many of us are now re-discovering the ‘secrets’ of what our parents (those born in the 1930’s and 40’s), aunts, uncles and grandparents simply did out of necessity to survive.

And little did I know the value of the ‘hidden secret’ that filled my stomach, nourished my body, warmed my spirit and enriched my memories.

It planted the seeds of traditional ways in me, many of which I’ve actively returned to, searched for and dug through older books to find out more about.

There’s value in some of the old ways.

Nothing new —- just buried or hidden away.

Treasures really. Old hard-learned wisdom.

And so, in this post, I’ll be touching on a re-emerging SECRET SUPERFOOD, Bone Broth, and hopefully add to your knowledge with some of my own SECRETS that will help you extend its’ shelf-life, whether homemade or bought.

Because I consider it to be a very valuable addition to our daily regimen, I value every single drop of it and work really hard to see that none is ever wasted.

It’s certainly more valuable IN ME (and YOU) than down the drain.
