Have you ever wanted to SPEAK CAT ???
Are you FRUSTRATED with your kitten or cat for always CLAWING or SCRATCHING at your furniture ?? Your legs ? Your feet ? Your screens ?
The thought of wishing I could speak ‘CAT’ came to me a few weeks ago when our kittens began floor climbing our sofa.
“What’s ‘floor climbing’?”, you ask.
It’s when a kitten lays on the floor and plants their claws in the horizontal base of the sofa and pulls themselves along the floor.
It’s the precursor to actually climbing the furniture, which is the stage that our 3 12-13 week old kittens were at.
And quite honestly, when it began, I thought the ‘floor climbing’ was cute, but when they started ‘practicing’ their clawing on my expensive indoor/outdoor wicker furniture and my cloth-covered sofas and chairs, the thrill soon went away.
Well, that stage didn’t last for long.
Within another 2 weeks, they began actually climbing the furniture and then clawing at it.
That was it.
“I wish I knew how to speak CAT,” I thought again to myself, “then I could tell these kittens NOT to claw at my furniture or anything else for that matter.”
What a brilliant idea !
“And HOW IN THE WORLD am I going to learn THAT ?”
Well, when you throw certain thoughts out into the Universe (or God – however you want to look at this), an answer has a way of showing up.
As luck would have it, I didn’t get much chance to dwell on it, as my thoughts got interrupted by the antics of one of kittens.
But within a few minutes, wouldn’t you know it—the answer presented itself.
And WHO better to teach me than the Mama Cat !!
Observation being one of my strengths (as a Health Detective), I got a chance to see Mama in action.
You see, that’s one of the perks of NOT TAKING KITTENS AWAY from their Mama and Papa until they’re at least 14 to 16 weeks old.
Because, if you’re like me, you’ll take that opportunity to “learn Cat” !!
And learn it, I have.
Now, it’s true.
I’m no “expert”.
And while I have learned a lot about cat behavior and language from observing the incredible cats that’ve been a part of my family, on and off, over the past 15 years, from
- our first, who wandered into our lives some 15 years ago, as a 1 yr old beautiful little Russian Blue cat we named “Cadeau” (which means “gift”), our first incredibly patient and affectionate little cat – he passed away several years ago 🙁 (he got hit by a car)
- our second, a beautiful medium-haired tabby with an incredible mane, that we renamed “Celeste” (he turned out to be a boy, but he took to his new name after only 2 weeks; his original name was “Fred”…really, who calls their cat “Fred” ?) – he passed away just 4 years ago from flea collar poisoning (still so sad) 🙁
- our third cat, a beautiful 6 yr old tuxedo cat named “Felix” that my oldest daughter saved – an incredibly patient, considerate and loving cat
- our fourth cat, that we also took in, who found our house and who had been abandoned. She had a broken tail and an injured left hind leg (which has since mended perfectly, the “How” of which will be the subject of an upcoming post), whom my daughter named “Artemis” – a beautiful Caramel & Chocolate Maine Coon that is true to her name (goddess of the hunt) but who has tamed down quite nicely since first taking her in some 5 months ago now
- and lastly, our fifth, sixth and seventh cats (kittens) – Little Max, Little Stripes and Little Grey Catsby (get it ???)
…for a current “living” total of 5 cats.
Plus the 3 feral cats outside –
the kittens’ Papa (one of the prettiest tabbies that we have ever seen, so pretty in fact, that since he first came to our porch almost 8 months or so ago, we thought he was a “she”. Then, one day, just about 6 weeks ago now, my daughter and I saw his jewels for the first time…ahhhh, so it was that “Cutie” became “QT”) and…
…their Mama (a previously abandoned Sealpoint Siamese) with crystal clear blue eyes.
AND another male…
that we call “Muscle Cat” because he’s so muscular—he’s the cat version of Arnold Schwarzennegger …lol
So again, while I learned a lot about cat behavior and cat manners from our first cat, Cadeau, who was a very mannerly little cat…
I never did learn how to teach a cat to NOT claw at something !!
And while all of our cats clawed at things, though not a lot, the clawing did takes its’ toll on our sofas, one of which you saw in my ad on Instagram.
I guess, compared to a lot of other cats, I’m lucky.
BUT still, it’s annoying when you want to keep your furniture as nice as possible, for as long as possible.
And now that I know HOW, you better believe I’m teaching my kittens how NOT TO CLAW at certain things.
BECAUSE remember, they do need to claw.
It’s just a matter of being selective about what exactly they claw.
And as their new “Mama”, they’re looking to me to teach them “right” from “wrong”…
and that includes what to claw and what not to claw.
Cats are incredibly inquisitive, as you’re probably already aware, and they’re also very, very aware and intelligent.
And they actually do look to us, as their surrogate parents, for direction and guidance as to what they should and shouldn’t be doing in their new homes.
Now, this is where it becomes important to know how to communicate with your cat in a way that they understand, because while they are very intelligent, there are still some things they’ll NEVER be able to understand unless YOU MAKE THE EFFORT to learn their language.
And that’s why I’m making this very special offer !!
