#13 – R-Lipoic Acid –
Research shows that R-lipoic acid chelates iron from our cells lysosomes which are little cellular organs that store iron.
Interestingly enough, this nutrient also appears to impede some iron uptake by the lens of the eye.
According to a study conducted by Goralska, Ferrell, et al.[1] on the metabolism of iron in the eye, “[i]ron-catalyzed reactions have been linked to changes in lens crystallins [2] [3], lens DNA damage [4] and cataract formation [5] [6] [7]“, and that R-lipoic acid cuts down on the development of cataracts.
Hence, R-Lipoic Acid plays a role in reducing the iron load of lysosomes in the eye, and consequently “iron-catalyzed reactions” that contribute to the development of cataracts.
R-Lipoic acid is also a very potent antioxidant that is credited with protecting our cells mitochondria, which are the fuel-converting mechanisms (energy centers) in our cells, and thereby slowing the rate at which we age.
So, it’s a very good thing.
Here’s another powerful antioxidant with the same iron-chelating, mitochondrial protecting and anti-aging benefits as R-Lipoic acid and it is. . .
